Prevention Of KIT Overselling

To explain the scenario of kit overselling:

Suppose a product is listed on marketplace individually, and the same product is clubbed with another product to form a kit and that kit is also listed on marketplace.

KIT Product (Virtual Bundle):

KIT

Single Listed Product's:

Lamination

What is Kit Overselling?

Until now, the stocks for the kit product were shown 100 on the marketplace (The minimum quantity of the products considered in the kit). For reference, the product ‘lamination’ is listed in both individual and kit category having 100 inventories each. Now, if the seller gets 80 orders for kit, still the individual inventory count would remain 100. But the seller has only 20 inventories left for lamination because 80 laminations are already sold through kit. This results in his product getting oversold at the marketplace as on the marketplace the individual inventory count remains 100.

Solution:

Now, when a kit(bundle) is listed on a marketplace, the inventories for the kit and the individual listings are restructured to avoid the scenario of kit overselling.

How are we doing that?

Let’s dive into it.

If I have 1 mobile,1 cover, and 2 laminations listed as a Bundle product (Kit).

And each product is listed separately as a single listing.

Total Quantities of each product are given in the below table:

Product

Stock

Mobile

200

Cover

150

Lamination

100

Steps to calculate new stock for each product:

  1. We calculate the total quantity listed for each product for a single purchase.
    For example, here we have Mobile (1+1) = 2, Cover (1+1) =2 and Lamination (1+2) = 3.

  2. We find the minimum stock available for that product.
    Here we have, Mobile (200/2 = 100), Cover (150/2 = 75) and Lamination (100/3 which is taken as 33).

  3. Therefore, the new stock for the kit product will be the minimum of the stocks calculated in step 2 which will be 33.

  4. The stock for the individual listing will also be updated after deducting the stock allocated for the kit product. (for Mobile 200-33 = 167, Cover: 150-33 = 117, Lamination: 100-33 = 67).

Final Stock for the products listed on marketplace is:
